A: Thanks for contacting me regarding this weight loss question. Although this 1,200 calorie diet may seem like a great way to lose weight, this low calorie level may be difficult to sustain, and as you mentioned, may lead to undesired side effects, such as dizziness. In looking at the USDA website, www.choosemyplate.gov., the recommendation for someone your age, height and weight is 2600 calories per day. Since you have been on a lower calorie diet already, it may be more realistic to follow ~2000 calorie diet. Although it is also difficult to count calories, the new food guidance system from the USDA does focus on portion control and filling half of your plate with fruits and vegetables at lunch and dinner meal. If you need an idea for a 2000 calorie meal plan, click on this link http://www.choosemyplate.gov/tipsresources/menus.html Additionally, many individuals find it helpful to keep a food diary and write down all the foods and fluids you eat and drink on a daily basis. This helps to keep you accountable as to what you have really eaten, and helps to spot negative behaviors, such as snacking after dinner while watching T.V., etc. In addition, be sure to increase activity, which can be something like walking 30 minutes per day, or even for 2 15-minute increments per day, whichever works best in your schedule . Best of luck to you in your weight loss endeavor!
